DTV Is Coming, Analog TV Out - Will You Be Ready?

That's right on February 17th of 2009, all full power broadcast television stations in the United States will stop broadcasting on analog airwaves and begin broadcasting in digital. This page is designed to help you with this transition. So what does all of this mean?
The Transition To Digital TV
TV stations serving all markets in the U.S. are airing digital television programming today, although most will continue to provide analog programming through Feb. 17th. At that point, full power TV stations will cease to broadcast on their current analog channels, and the spectrum they use for this will be reclaimed and put to other uses.
The Digital Tuner rule specifies that as of March 1, 2007, all new TVs must include digital tuners. The FCC has adopted a rule requiring sellers to display the following text if they are selling TV equipment with only an analog broadcast tuner.
So Will I need Additional Equipment to Receive Programs on My TV?
Consumer's who rely on antennas (including outside antennas and rabbit ears to receive over the air broadcast signals on their TV sets having only analog tuners will need to obtain separate digital to analog set top converter boxes to watch over the air TV. These boxes receive digital signals and convert them into analog format for displaying on your TV. These converter boxes could run anywhere between $50 -$70.00. As you read further you will be able to print off or send for a coupon that participating retailer's will accept to help save you some money.
What If I Have Cable or Satellite Already?
Cable subscriber's may need new DTV equipment to view DTV programming in digital format. You will need to contact your cable provider to see what you will need and when.
Satellite subscriber's may need new DTV equipment to receive and view HD High Definition TV digital programming. You will need to contact your satellite company for what you will need and when. There will be links at the bottom for top cable and satellite hookup information.
What do Quality Levels Mean?
Standard Definition TV ( SDTV): basic level of quality display and resolution for analog and digital.
Enhanced Definition TV (EDTV): Is a step up from analog TV. It provides better picture quality compared to SDTV but not as good as HDTV.
High Definition TV (HDTV): HDTV in widescreen format provides the highest resolution and picture quality of all the digital broadcast formats. Combined with digitally enhanced sound technology, HDTV sets new standards for sound and picture quality in television.

Analog
1. Date for final transition to digital is February 17th, 2009. All broadcasts will be digital signals.
2. Consumers will always be able to connect an inexpensive receiver, a digital to analog converter box, to their existing analog TV to decode the DTV broadcast.
3. Digitial to analog converter boes will not convert your analog TV to high-definition.
4. Analog TVs will continue to work with cable, satellite, VCRs, DVD players, camcorders, video games consoles and other devices for years to come.
